Background of the Study
In many parts of Nigeria, socio-religious norms significantly shape individuals' aspirations, particularly in relation to women’s participation in politics. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, socio-religious expectations often influence the roles that women can occupy in society, and these expectations are often restrictive when it comes to political ambition (Mohammed & Umar, 2023). Sokoto, being a predominantly Muslim region, has strong socio-religious structures that define the public and private spheres for women, which can either empower or hinder their political aspirations. The impact of these norms on women’s political ambition has been a subject of growing concern, as many women who might otherwise be interested in politics face significant barriers due to societal and religious constraints (Aliyu & Suleiman, 2024). These constraints include cultural expectations that women should focus on domestic responsibilities, as well as religious doctrines that limit women’s roles in public and political life. Moreover, the social structures in Sokoto often elevate male leadership while relegating women to subservient positions in political discourse (Bello, 2025). This study seeks to explore how socio-religious norms in Sokoto South affect women’s political ambition, examining the social, cultural, and religious factors that discourage or promote female involvement in political activities. By investigating these issues, the study aims to provide insights into how these norms can be redefined to create more inclusive political spaces for women in Sokoto.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing number of women engaging in politics across Nigeria, women in Sokoto South face significant challenges when it comes to political ambition. These challenges are largely shaped by socio-religious norms that define appropriate roles for women in society. These norms often discourage women from pursuing political leadership positions, as they are expected to prioritize their roles as wives and mothers, which limits their opportunities to engage in public life (Sadiq & Shuaibu, 2024). The study seeks to address this gap by investigating how socio-religious expectations impact women’s political ambition in Sokoto South, particularly focusing on the factors that suppress or encourage women to pursue political careers. Understanding these dynamics will help in identifying strategies to empower women in Sokoto and other similar regions to overcome socio-religious barriers and increase their political participation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the socio-religious factors that influence women’s political ambition in Sokoto South Local Government Area.

  • To identify the key challenges faced by women in Sokoto South due to socio-religious norms in pursuing political office.

  • To assess the role of socio-religious norms in shaping women’s political aspirations in Sokoto South.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do socio-religious norms influence women’s political ambition in Sokoto South Local Government Area?

  • What are the major challenges faced by women in Sokoto South in pursuing political office due to socio-religious expectations?

  • In what ways can socio-religious norms be redefined to promote women’s political ambitions in Sokoto South?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Socio-religious norms in Sokoto South significantly inhibit women’s political ambition.

  • The influence of socio-religious norms on women’s political ambition varies based on education and socio-economic status in Sokoto South.

  • Redefining socio-religious norms to include more gender-equitable values will increase women’s political participation in Sokoto South.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in advancing the understanding of how socio-religious norms influence women’s political aspirations in Sokoto South. By examining these factors, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on gender and politics in Northern Nigeria, offering insights into how socio-religious structures can be reformed to support female political ambition. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, religious leaders, and gender equality advocates in Sokoto South and beyond, as they strive to create an inclusive environment where women’s political aspirations can thrive.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus specifically on Sokoto South Local Government Area and will examine the impact of socio-religious norms on women’s political ambition within this region. The limitations of the study include the potential reluctance of some respondents to openly discuss socio-religious norms and their influence due to cultural sensitivities. Additionally, the study will rely primarily on qualitative methods, which may limit the ability to generalize findings across other regions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Socio-religious Norms: Social and religious customs, beliefs, and practices that influence the roles and behaviors of individuals in a society, particularly relating to gender expectations.

  • Political Ambition: The desire and aspiration of an individual to participate in political activities and to assume political leadership roles.
